Do you have Dad’s gift picked out? Here at Wilson, we’re obviously partial to the greatness of our custom football, so there’s not much else we can honestly recommend as a great gift. But we’d still love to be of service as you shop, so here are 5 things that are absolutely not among the best Father’s Day gifts. Whether you’re the child or spouse of the dad you’re shopping for, you should probably avoid the following.

5. Bottle Opener/Important Date Reminder

Why isn’t this a Best Father’s Day Gift? Two gifts in one! What could possibly go wrong? Just one thing: passive-aggressive gifting is received about as well as a football thrown to an offensive lineman.

Stylish bottle opener? Good gift idea. Handmade calendar with important dates written in? Good gift idea. Bottle opener and calendar combo? Bad gift idea.

4. Gift Cards

Why isn’t this a Best Father’s Day Gift? Gift cards are a $100 billion dollar industry mostly because they’re how we give cash to someone while still appearing to be thoughtful. But before you get a gift card for Father’s Day, think about this: what you’re really saying is “Here you go, Dad! I know how much you love to shop!”

Fact: Around 20% of gift cards purchased go completely unspent. We’d bet a good amount of that 20% are cards given to dads.

3. Funny T-Shirts

Why isn’t this a Best Father’s Day Gift? Don’t get us wrong, hilarious t-shirts are great. However, they’re only great in small doses. What happens when you hear a great joke over…and over…and over? It gets less and less funny until eventually you just want it to go away.

And so it will go with Dad’s t-shirt. It’ll get less funny each time he wears it until he finally discards it forever. You’re better off just reading the legendary Amazon customer reviews of the Three Wolf Moon shirt.

2. Gym Membership

Why isn’t this a Best Father’s Day Gift? Remember that tip about passive-aggressive gifting? The gym membership says “You don’t look as good as I think you should but I don’t want to simply tell you that so here’s a gift that will hopefully get the point across.” There are better ways to motivate!

1. Whatever This Is

Why isn’t this a Best Father’s Day gift? Just trust us on this one.

This story was brought to you by Father’s Day at Wilson. Getting Dad his very own custom football is quite possibly the best Father’s Day gift ever.

Back in October 2012, long before our Capture the Moment Photo Contest began, Jenn (one of our fantastic Facebook fans) shared a photo of her niece. As if it weren’t enough that little Ellie Grace has possibly the bluest eyes of all time, she’s also got a Wilson in her hands! Naturally, we love every aspect of the photo and wanted to use this space to thank Jenn for her generosity. On the left is the original photo, and on the right is our mockup of how it’d look on one of our custom footballs.

Ellie Grace is now front and center on our new Father’s Day page. We want to say a huge Wilson thank you to Jenn and Ellie Grace for giving us a little landing page inspiration.

Do you have a photo you want captured on a Wilson Custom Football? The Capture the Moment Photo Contest is happening now on Facebook. Just click the picture below to share your photo!

Our Capture the Moment Photo Contest is going on now! Submit a favorite photo to our Facebook page and you have a chance to get the pic immortalized on a Wilson Custom Football. Click here to get sharing!

Just how different can things get in 21 years? We were inspired by a fan named Justin to come up with a few ways in which 1990 differs from 2011.

In 1990: Home Alone, Ghost, and Dances with Wolves were the top three movies at the box office, grossing a combined $1.4 billion worldwide.
In 2011: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 were the top three movies at the box office, grossing a combined $3.2 billion worldwide.

In 1990: Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 was the bestselling album, selling about 5 million copies. Adele, 2011′s #1 artist, was two years old.
In 2011: Adele’s 21 also sold 5 million copies.

In 1990: The world’s first website, info.cern.ch (it still exists!) was a year away from creation.
In 2011: There were over 500 million websites and 3 billion email accounts.

Obviously, much more has happened in those 21 years. Those are just a few examples of how drastically things can change. With all that’s different across two decades, does anything stay the same?

We know one thing that does. As proof, we’d like to share the photo that Justin originally shared with us. It shows him in 1990 carrying a Wilson football. And right next to that photo is him in 2011, still carrying a Wilson (looks like it’s a TDS), and still protecting it as if his life depends on it.

So don’t worry too much about how quickly things can change. Some things never do.
